3 Possible Reasons Your Air Conditioning Unit Has Stopped Working

With summer right around the corner, temperatures are starting to soar across the country. So many people rely on their air conditioning units to keep their homes cool during the hot summer months. But what happens when your air conditioner stops working the way it should? You can either live through the horrendous heat or you can figure out the problem and get it fixed. Here are three possible reasons your air conditioning unit has stopped working.

1. The filter is dirty.

Obviously, in warm months you want cool air to come from your vents. If you have a dirty filter, however, your unit will put out air that is much warmer than you would like. You have to change the filter on your air conditioning unit regularly to keep it working the way it is supposed to.

The filter serves to filter out all of the dust, dirt, and other gross things in the air. Once the filter gets clogged up, the air conditioner has to work harder, but can't get the air as cool anymore. For this reason, you should always check your filter each week to make sure it doesn't need to be replaced.

2. You have a faulty thermostat.

Another reason your air conditioning unit may not work is because of a faulty thermostat. In order for the air conditioning unit to turn on, the thermostat has to be working. There are several ways to troubleshoot the thermostat to see if it's what is causing your air conditioner problems.

One way is to put it on a lower setting than you usually do to see if the unit turns on. If it doesn't, then you should look to make sure there is nothing else that can keep it from turning on, such as loose wiring, dead batteries in the thermostat, etc. If you can't find any other explanation for the unit not turning on, you likely need to have the thermostat replaced.

3. The evaporator coil is dirty.

The evaporator coil is partly responsible for cooling the air that comes through the vents in your home. If the coil is dirty, then it can't do its job. It is important to make sure your air conditioning unit doesn't have a dirty evaporator coil because it can cause the unit to use up significantly more energy trying to cool your home.

Having a dirty evaporator coil can also lead to an entire failure of your air conditioning unit, which will cost you a lot of money to fix or replace. It is a good idea to have your air conditioning unit inspected at least once a year to make sure everything is clean and in good working order before you start using it during the summer.
